Pre virtualization: As you embark upon a server virtualization program, one of the initial tasks for you and your data center teams is to identify which physical servers are suitable for virtualization. Even with only a single application on each physical device you will need to discover which current applications are running on which servers, what is the criticality of each application, who they are owned by, who they are supported by, ensure they have adequate power provision and when are the periods when these applications are running at minimal capacity.

Once the task of identifying these attributes has been completed using existing spreadsheets etc, the next job is to schedule a time to take these devices offline to load the virtualization software and rebuild the new environment.

Post virtualization: Now that there are less physical servers, but many more applications running on each device, these remaining servers are more critical than ever before, and working much harder. When these devices require maintenance, patching or even replacement, the task of moving the virtual instance may be automated, but the remaining information will still reside upon disparate spreadsheets. nlyte® will automatically Map the relevant applications to the virtualized server along with all associated domain dependencies and related Assets.
