nlyte Express

nlyte Express is specifically designed to support the requirements of medium size data centers, typically consisting of 50-200 racks.  At this size data center, manageability, and cost are a major concern.  The management of the data center is complex to the point where spreadsheets and Microsoft add-ons are neither dynamic, nor robust enough, to model changes and optimize critical resources like power, cooling, space, and network connections.  Organizations are also aware of the significance of increased power requirements and their growing cost. nlyte Express solves these challenges and more.

The nlyte Express system models all of your network devices and their relationships to other assets within your datacenter. Port-to-port relationships are modeled between all assets in the network chain, ensuring physical relationships are correctly mapped between the devices.

Graphical physical network mapping
Using the nlyte Express advanced network management utilities, you can view and edit the attributes of network connections and relationships with your network devices. These intuitive graphical interfaces make it easy for you to manage and track the precise port-to-port connections throughout the network chain.
nlyte® Express automatically updates the network asset summary and port connections grids to help you create and manage the relationships between network devices
nlyte® Express automatically updates the network asset summary and port connections grids to help you create and manage the relationships between network devices

nlyte Express allows you to modify connection properties between network cards on servers and the network device; using the port connection editor you can select ports on destination network assets. nlyte Express enables you to view and manage the attributes of each connection: end point IP and MAC addresses, port name, connection speed, connection and cable type. All of which allows you to build an extensive network chain which automatically includes devices whenever you connect them.

Using the nlyte Express color-coded Port Connection Editor you can consume connections on destination network assets and create port-to-port relationships

Network relationship navigator
To help you navigate the network chains within your datacenter, nlyte Express provides a graphical network navigator. From a scrolling list, you can select and display the properties of any network asset connected to your device within the network and open the record to see details of the network chain.

Using the nlyte Express Linear Network Relationships Navigator you can follow and view the connections between each of the network assets on the linear network of your device

Power and Cooling | Print |  Email
Managing the power requirements of your datacenter equipment and the heat it emits are essential functions. Failure of either will have a significant impact on the performance of your business. To help you do so the nlyte Express Datacenter Module models the power and cooling infrastructure within your datacenter.

Managing the power chain
nlyte Express provides power management capabilities, allowing you to plan and map the entire power chain. With these capabilities you can track the relationships and dependencies from a power distribution unit (PDU) to equipment within cabinets. The nlyte Express power chain includes the following infrastructure devices:
  • PDU – the PDU asset record nlyte Express automatically creates includes a breaker table detailing breaker capacity and individual breaker allocation and configuration. As each breaker is created, nlyte Express also creates an associated power socket. As a result, the PDU record is related to the UPS record, the breakers on the PDU, the power sockets and all devices connected to the power sockets.
  • Industrial power socket – connects a breaker to datacenter locations to provide a power outlet for consuming equipment. Power strips mounted in cabinets or floor standing equipment are connected and record which industrial power socket is supplying the power.
  • Power strip – connects to an industrial power socket and has multiple power outlets from which assets can consume power.
nlyte Express gives you visibility of the entire power chain allowing you to plan capacity and manage planned and unplanned power outages effectively. Using information about the power capacity of a PDU and the draw against it, you can easily calculate available capacity and the implications of planning for additional equipment.

Managing cooling capacity
nlyte Express maps the capacity of your air conditioning units and the heat output of your equipment to help you track cooling capacity against cooling requirements in your datacenter or server room. Using this information you can determine the potential effect of planned installations upon existing active devices to ensure that you do not exceed available cooling capacity. To help you manage heat effectively, nlyte Express applies power consumption and thermal ratings to each asset from its associated material record.

Effortless end-to-end asset lifecycle management
The nlyte Express Datacenter Module provides complete lifecycle management for all your assets, enabling you to maintain control of planned, active and operational assets, including maintenance cycles, location and structural changes, recycling and decommissioning processes.

The nlyte Express Datacenter Module enables you to manage the location and structure of the assets in the following ways:
  • Recommend ideal location of assets using “auto allocation feature”
  • Placement of assets
  • Plan and execute equipment moves
  • Plan and execute decommissions
  • Plan and execute recycling

Complete asset repository

Manage and build relationships between the following assets (including configurations, relationships, power requirements, power supplies, cabinet contents and cabinet capacity location) within your datacenter:
  • Servers - logical hosts, hosted applications and software, servers and their peripheral assets
  • Cabinets - rack server enclosures or cabinets, cabinet mounted power strips, and keyboard video and mouse (KVM) assets
  • Infrastructure - power distribution units (PDUs), breakers, industrial power sockets and air conditioning units
  • Networks - network assets
  • Peripherals - peripheral of any sort connected to server as related to server.  Peripherals can be moved as part of a scheduled server move.

Supplied materials catalogue
The materials catalogue within the nlyte Express Datacenter Module holds the material specification templates used to create your physical assets. The materials catalogue includes a range of manufacturers’ assets and GDCM issues updates of the catalogue as new equipment is released. In addition, you can create custom records.

A powerful graphical tool for planning and managing your datacenter
The nlyte Express Floor Planner is a graphical tool for managing the physical layout of the floors and rooms within your datacenter. It allows you to drag and drop assets onto the floor plan and position them to create the precise room layout you require. Using the nlyte Express zoom and measuring tools you can position assets to within an accuracy of 0.01mm. The floor planner also helps you manage operational issues within the datacenter such as power provision, use of space, heat control and air flow.

The nlyte Express floor planner presents you with a layered representation of the layout of your datacenter to help you plan and position equipment and resolve operational issues

Layered modeling of your datacenter assets
The Floor Planner presents a layered representation of all the assets on your datacenter floor. You can create individual layers for each asset category such as cabinets, floor standing servers, power infrastructure, air conditioning and networks. These can be displayed together or separately to simplify datacenter planning and issue resolution. These layers also include a layout layer that holds your floor plan drawings with static equipment and a grid layer that provides you with axes alignment guidelines.

Color coded asset monitoring and capacity reporting
To help your managers identify potential threats and issues, the nlyte Express Floor Planner includes real-time ad hoc capacity reports. As work continues within your datacenter, nlyte Express monitors the different performance thresholds that apply to each device. If your operations result in these thresholds being approached or exceeded, nlyte Express color codes the affected device on the appropriate layer of the report’s graphical output.

The floor planner reports include:
  • Used/available space
  • Heat output/available cooling capacity
  • Used/available network ports in any given cabinet

Easily track asset relationships and records to help you resolve issues
From the color coded results of each report you can quickly identify any jeopardized asset and click on it to drill down into the detail. This may launch the cabinet planner, from where you can display the cabinet asset record to understand why thresholds are low, or display the associated asset record from within the nlyte datacenter module. From each of these asset records you can follow the relationship chain to explore the conditions of any other related asset.
From the color coded graphical output of a floor planner report you can identify a jeopardized asset and launch the associated asset record within the Datacenter Module to explore the issue

The nlyte Express Floor Planner provides you with easy access to all assets in the relationship chain, from whichever end you choose to start. You no longer have to rely on a difficult combination of design drawings and spreadsheets. Instead, the graphical presentation of this information by nlyte Express makes it easy for you to track the asset chain in order to understand where potential issues exist and how to resolve them.
