The Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP was born in 1954. Before entering Parliament Iain served in the Scots Guards for six years. He has also been a businessman - working in defence and publishing sectors, before entering Parliament.
Elected in 1992, he was appointed to the shadow cabinet in 1997 when William Hague became Conservative leader. He held the social security and then the defence portfolios under William Hague.
He was elected Conservative leader in September 2001 - at the time of the 9/11 attacks on America. He stood down in October 2003 and established The Centre for Social Justice, the aims of which are the promotion of the small charity community sector. He has published a novel "The Devil's Tune" and seven pamphlets.
